The Umbwe Route is renowned as the steepest and most direct path to Kilimanjaro’s summit, offering a challenging and rewarding experience for fit, experienced climbers. This 6-day itinerary approaches from the south through dense rainforest before emerging onto exposed ridges with dramatic views. It later joins the Machame Route for the final ascent, providing solid acclimatization in the upper sections.

Day 1: Umbwe Gate (1,600m) to Umbwe Camp (2,940m)

Transfer from Moshi to Umbwe Gate for registration, then begin the steep forest ascent through a quiet and beautiful rainforest trail.

  • Distance: 11 km
  • Elevation gain: 1,340 m
  • Habitat: Rainforest

Day 2: Umbwe Camp (2,940m) to Barranco Camp (3,960m)

Continue up the narrow Umbwe ridge as the forest opens into moorland and dramatic views toward Kibo and the Barranco Valley.

  • Elevation gain: 1,020 m
  • Habitat: Moorland

Day 3: Barranco Camp Acclimatisation Day

Spend an extra day around Barranco for acclimatisation, rest, and a short optional hike before continuing higher on the mountain.

  • Hiking time: 2-3 hours optional acclimatisation walk
  • Overnight altitude: 3,960 m
  • Purpose: Rest, recovery, and acclimatisation
  • Habitat: Alpine desert

Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,960m) to Karanga Camp (4,035m)

Climb the famous Barranco Wall, then traverse ridges and valleys with excellent southern circuit views before reaching Karanga Camp.

  • Hiking time: 4-5 hours
  • Distance: 5 km
  • Elevation gain: 75 m net
  • Habitat: Alpine desert

Day 5: Karanga Camp (4,035m) to Barafu Camp (4,640m)

Make a steady climb to Barafu high camp, rest in the afternoon, eat an early dinner, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.

  • Distance: 4 km
  • Elevation gain: 605 m
  • Habitat: Alpine desert

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Begin the summit push around midnight, reach Stella Point and Uhuru Peak at sunrise, then descend to Mweka Camp for the night.

  • Hiking time: 7-8 hours ascent, 5-7 hours descent
  • Distance: 5 km ascent, 12 km descent
  • Elevation gain/loss: 1,255 m up, 2,795 m down
  • Habitat: Arctic summit zone to rainforest edge

Day 7: Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m)

Descend through rainforest to Mweka Gate, collect summit certificates, and transfer back to Moshi for a hot shower and celebration.

  • Elevation loss: 1,460 m
  • Habitat: Rainforest
